Gravity

The body often adapts to the demands of gravity through fatigue and collapse.  For many of us, our joints hurt, we have no energy, we have difficulty going up stairs and are generally restricted in our movement patterns.  In the Alexander Technique, principles of direction help us oppose the relentless force of gravity.

“Let the neck be free, to let the head move forward and up,
so the back can lengthen and widen.  Let the feet oppose the ground.”

Imagery is used in the Alexander Technique to understand the concept of direction.  For example, a tree, both rooted and extending into the space above, is a dynamic model for posture.

What do these images have in common?

  • Expansiveness
  • Ease
  • Anti-gravity – spring/opposition to the ground
